Chapter 13

The room was quiet except for breathing. Hers and someone else’s, though she couldn’t quite see in the blue-tinged darkness. She waved a hand in front of her face, only the cool air blowing past letting her know that she was doing it. Though she couldn’t see, she didn’t feel fear. Didn’t feel much of anything, come to think of it. A mild curiosity as to who else was here and a warm fuzzy blankness that coated her like a blanket. That was it.

She was lying on some sort of bed. It was soft and, when she reached out to her sides, there were rails. Some sort of hospital bed maybe. There was a sheet draped over her and pulled up just above her waist. It felt insubstantial, more like the idea of a sheet than an actual sheet. She sat up, narrowing her eyes and trying to see through the darkness. It was no good. All she could see was blue.

“Hello?” she called softly, not wanting to shatter the quiet too much. “Who’s here?”

“Leslie? Is that you?” a male voice replied, just as quiet as hers. “Where are we?”

“Rob?” Leslie asked as she recognized the voice. “I don’t know. What’s the last thing you remember?”

“Uh, getting injected with the new cells,” Rob replied after a long pause. “You think we had a bad reaction or something? Why can’t I see?”

“I can’t see anything either,” Leslie replied. She turned her head to the right, where the voice seemed to be coming from, but couldn’t see even the outlines of Rob. “I think it’s just dark. But does it look a little… blue to you?”

“… Yeah, it does,” Rob said. “I was hoping it didn’t. You know what those kids said when they were injected. They dreamed in blue. Always blue, like the cells.”

There was a hollowness to his voice that scared Leslie. What was wrong with the blue? If it was like the cells, didn’t that mean that the new cells were working as promised? They were bonding with their own cells and hopefully giving them some sort of ability. Just like it had for the college kids in the two trials. So what did Rob know that made him sound like that?

“I think we should be ready to run,” Rob continued, still hollow. “The next part of the dreams usually involved running from some sort of monster. Even if this is a dream, I don’t want to know what happens if it catches us.”

“You’re just as optimistic in my dreams as you are in real life, Rob,” Leslie muttered sarcastically rolling her eyes. Of course she was dreaming. This was the usual process for bonding with Gnotret. Though she wondered why she was dreaming of Rob. Maybe because she knew he had been injected too.

“This is real, Leslie, I’m real,” Rob said. A hand touched her arm and the fingers slid down to her wrist. Then, the fingers pinched her hard. Leslie yelped and yanked her arm away. “See? I’m real.
